About Willow Pattern Breakfast Plate
The Willow Pattern consists of an assembly of many Chinese inspired themes and was most likely first produced by Spode around 1790. Although similar designs were first produced at Caughley in 1779.
In the late 18th century there was a hype for Chinese inspired design. The Willow Pattern incorporates many Chinese inspired themes but manages to stay quintessentially British.
It is one of the most well known and enduring patterns ever designed. It is the British counterpart of the German (but also Chinese inspired) Onion Pattern.
The Willow Pattern is almost always made of transferware, these antique stoneware plates are no exception.
The plates were most likely made in the second half of the 19th century.
